Horses aren't my whole life, but they make my life whole.

image

When I am an old Horsewoman

I shall wear turquoise and diamonds, and a straw hat that doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my social security on white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alley-way of my barn and listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night and ride the old bay gelding, across the moonstruck meadow if my old bones will allow.
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod as I walk past the gardens to the barn and show instead the flowers growing inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.
And I will be an embarrassment to all, who will not yet have found the peace in being free to have a horse as a best friend, a friend who waits at midnight hour with muzzle and nicker and patient eyes for the kind of woman I will be.
When I am old.

  1. 8/20 - Mike's doctor follow up

    08/20/08 16:48:55 | 0 Comments

Mike's 2 week follow up went good. No cancer. The doctor is pleased with the incision, etc.
Told Mike to do whatever he wanted within reason-- no heavy lifting and come back in 2 weeks.
This was the first day he had been in a car since he came home from the hospital-- just didn't care if he went anywhere or not (that should tell you something)

So-- good news. He's walking at least twice a day-- a little further each day-- so he'll keep that up--

Mike is getting stronger every day.
AND- thanks for the phone calls, cards etc--- image

He goes back to the doctor this coming Wednesday. He did call the doctor the other day-- he has a "knot" in his forearm and it's hot and swelling. The doctor said it is a blood clot-- his IV broke thru the vein in his hand during his hospital stay-- but-- it's not...

Mike is hanging in there. Pretty uncomfortable. All things are as expected I guess.
The incision is alot longer than the doctor originally told us it would be. I'm pretty tired- yesterday I had the farrier out in the morning-- then went to the grocery and then cut grass all afternoon. Got the zero turn mower "hung up" and had to have my neighbor pull me out image-...

So-- keep your fingers crossed everything comes out ok image - it's been a long...
  6. Mike update- 8/8

You horse people will appreciate this -- Mike started having "gut sounds" tonight!
Still nothing by mouth - but other than the IV - they have unhooked him every where else.
He's getting up several times a day and sat up in a chair for a little while. It would have been a very good day but he had a terrible headache all day. He can't take any medicine - and didn't want any more morphine - said it gives him crazy dreams - so he tried an ice bag...

Mike is doing pretty good. Got his stomach "draining" tube out today. And he got up to walk around a little 3 times. The first time was the hardest - but he knows he has to do it. Each time he did better.

Still nothing to eat-- won't for a day or two. He's pretty sore naturally but is cutting back on the pain medicine as he said it gives him weird dreams. No fever and his blood pressure is good too-- so--- so far so good!

Hot Hot Hot!! And dry! Our pastures are getting so thin-I've taken the horses off them all week. We did get about an inch of rain this week- always something.

Erik will go back to work next week. He will have to go back to the doctor in 2 weeks to check his blood level and have to stay on the coumadin for about 6 months.

Mike has his blood work and xrays etc Friday for his surgery. We both just want it over. One of his sons is coming in from Kansas City - I'm...

Erik DOES have a blood clot--so he will have to have heparin shots for a week and start on coumadin (sp) too.
I'm pretty worried-- I'm trying not to -- but I can't help it!image 7/29/08 update-- Erik's swelling is getting better every day-- he still has the heparin shots for a day or two and is going to the doctor twice a week to check his blood levels.
    He was...

It's an absolute beautiful day to ride- and---- I'm at work--

My son Erik went back to the surgeon Monday for his checkup. He has had a ankle swelling problem the last few days--- so he has an ultrasound today to check for a blood clot. It's only 1 foot so I don't think it's water retension - so I'm a little concerned. I also just found out that he is on high blood pressure medicine too!!

So-- it goes along with getting more anxious about...
